Q1.How do I get FliteStar v9.5?
close
FliteStar customers with a 3X, 56-day or 28-day revision service will get version 9.5 automatically when it’s rolled out. If you do not currently have a revision service you can upgrade to FliteStar v9.5 by purchasing a one time update starting at just $69 (price varies with your level and geo coverage).
Q2.If I use CSC or DTC DUAT/s as my weather provider now, will I still be able to use that service once FliteStar v9.5 goes live?
close
Yes. You’ll be able to use DUAT/s much as you do now. By going to the Weather tab, you can select Jeppesen or either DUAT/s source as your provider then choose from the products they offer just as in v9.4. You can view text information and graphic maps in the weather tab area but will no longer be able to overly DUAT/s graphics on the Enroute chart. Overlays in the enroute chart will be Jeppesen Weather graphics only.
Q3.Since Jeppesen weather includes so many elements and can cover a significant time span, is there any spool up period needed before I can see the weather on the enroute chart?
close
Yes, because the weather information is extensive, some spool up time will be needed before everything can be seen. The time required depends on your coverage area and the speed of your connection and can range from a few seconds to several minutes.
Q4.How many weather elements can I display on the enroute chart at the same time?
close
You can display nothing (by turning Jeppesen Weather off completely) or you can display up to 9 graphical elements at the same time (AIRMETs, SIGMETs, Radar, Lightning, Surface Analysis, METARs, Icing, Turbulence and Winds). The optimal number displayed will vary from user to user. FliteStar will remember your selections from session to session.
Q5.If I don’t want to see the Live Weather Legend can I turn it off?
close
Yes. To turn it off or make it more or less visible, right click on the legend then select “Hide” or choose “Opaque or Transparent” to make it more or less visible. If the legend does not appear on the enroute map and you wish to see it, right click on the chart and select “Live Weather Legend”. The Legend cannot be resized but it can be moved around by left clicking then moving it to the location of your choice.
Q6.What’s the purpose of the Chart Time Slider?
close
The Chart Time Slider allows you to view weather at the current time, as your flight progresses and as far as 72 hours into the future by moving the slider button left or right of the red line (current time). Since the forecast period for the weather elements varies, visibility of some elements will disappear as the bug is moved. Abbreviations for elements that continue to be available will display in black below the slider bar. Elements not available will show up in gray. For more information on how the slider bar works please view the embedded tutorial in the FliteStar v9.5 program or go to the FliteStar Product Page.
Q7.I know that some weather elements (turbulence, icing and winds) are altitude dependent. For these elements how do I know altitude I’m seeing on the chart?
close
In the new weather toolbar there is an altitude slider icon that allows you to adjust the altitude of the weather element seen on the chart. The weather legend will also tell you the altitude of the weather elements being displayed.
Q8.Can I turn the slider bar off (remove it from view) if I don’t wish to see it?
close
Yes. To turn it on or off go to “View” on the menu bar and check or uncheck “Chart Time Controller” as desired (or optionally select CNTRL+N which will accomplish the same thing.
Q9.What’s the blue bar that appears above the slider control?
close
The blue bar represents the duration of your planned flight. The left end is your departure time and the right end your planned arrival time. The width of the bar corresponds with the duration of your flight.
Q10.What are the Hour/Minute and Date Time indications in the upper left and right corners of the Chart Time Controller showing?
close
The time shown in the top left corner reflects how many hours and minutes before current time (the Red Line) or after current time you are viewing. The Date/Time in the upper right corner show the data and time as you move into the future. You look forward up to 72 hours (depending on weather type).
Q11.Why would anyone want to turn Live Weather off?
close
The CPU capacity needed to constantly update the background weather view is fairly significant. There may be times (for example when just “what if” planning or if you are on a slow speed connection) where you might not want to wait for the processing of weather data. In such situations turning Live Weather off will improve your system performance.
Q12.Are there any instructional materials or tutorials to help me with the new features and functions in FliteStar v9.5?
close
Yes there are. A “Quick Look Tutorial” is embedded in the program for all users to see when it’s first loaded. In addition, specific tutorials covering New Weather Features; Planning with the Wizard; Planning on the Enroute Chart and GPS Upload/download procedures are available on the FliteStar product page. Links to all of these files can be found near the bottom of the FliteStar product page. You will also find information on all enhancements and new functions in our searchable and context sensitive Help Files starting with the “What’s New” section.
Q13.Sometimes when FliteStar first opens, or I move the chart view to a different region, there is a shaded box over part of the chart. After a while, the shaded area goes away. What am I seeing?
close
The shaded areas indicate that some weather data for those regions is in the process of being downloaded. With slower connection speeds you may even see the shaded area disappear piece by piece as each data file finishes downloading. The shaded area might also change size or location as a different weather type begins downloading. If you have a worldwide NavData coverage, you may also see a shaded area along the International Dateline. All the shading means the same thing – a weather data download is in progress.
