ICAO Aviation English Testing and Training

Overview

Take your ICAO compliant aviation English test online or in an instructor led training using the Jeppesen testing and training solution. Those who do not meet the ICAO Level 4 requirement will be required to complete training. Obtain ICAO Level 1 through Level 4 English training with this course. Your training can be completed entirely online or taken partially online through a blended learning approach that combines distance learning with onsite classroom learning, which research indicates is the most effective approach.

Course Content

The Jeppesen ICAO English training program will train applicants to take the ICAO Level 4 English proficiency exam. Applicants are placed into one of five skill levels, based upon current proficiency testing: Basic, Beginner, High Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each skill level course consists of 18 lessons, with interactive activities. Each lesson takes approximately 8 hours to complete, and includes quizzes on: Listening and ATC Communication, Pronunciation Exercises, General and Technical Vocabulary, Grammar, and Reading Comprehension.

Training can be completed completely online from any location. Training can also be taken partially online through a blended learning approach that combines distance learning with onsite classroom learning. Research indicates that a blended learning model is the most effective approach.

Jeppesen Aviation English training integrates topics such as Flight Safety, Meteorology, and Aviation Physiology, which enables training to focus on the terminology critical to the applicant's career. Training also contains exercises such as ATC to Pilot Communication, based upon real ATC tapes from a variety of international locations. Each course includes interesting topics and interactive activities. The Jeppesen Aviation English training has been greatly influenced by ICAO and several worldwide National Aviation Authorities. Each lesson includes quizzes on: Listening and Speech (thru pronunciation exercises and/or onsite training), General and Technical Vocabulary, Grammar, and Reading Comprehension.

When delivering training, Jeppesen will focus on three key customer requirements:

  • Minimize the impact of training on customer operations
  • Finalize training as soon as possible
  • Provide monthly progress reports to help manage large training initiatives

The Online Component

Trainees Build Confidence: Trainees can learn at their own pace in a non-threatening environment. They build confidence because of the number of assessment tools, feedback to a variety of quizzes and tracking of their progress. This prepares them for a higher level of learning during the on-site sessions.

Trainees Hear and Repeat the Language: Jeppesen's courses use multiple voice professionals who demonstrate correct usage of Aviation English. Trainees can listen to each lesson as often as they want to help them get comfortable with the language. Sophisticated pronunciation exercises are a part of the Aviation English Program. This allows trainees to record and get feedback on their speaking skills.

Trainees have Maximum Flexibility: Rather than leaving their work to travel to a training facility for a long period of time, trainees can schedule their Aviation English training around their individual schedules — at the office, at a training center, at home, while traveling — anywhere they have access to a PC.

The On-site Component

Professional Trainers: Jeppesen certified trainers, who are ESL professionals, deliver the on-site portion of the program.

Expansion of Online Content: The on-site sessions give the trainees a deeper understanding of the course content while they are developing their language skills.

Development of Speaking Skills: During the classroom sessions, trainees get extensive practice in the listening and speaking skills that are so important for radiotelephony. Trainees participate in a variety of activities to improve their use of ICAO phraseology and to learn how to communicate in both standard and nonstandard situations -- skills that pilots and air traffic controllers need to reach ICAO's required Operational Level 4.

Controlled Setting: The controlled setting of a classroom provides the opportunity for additional testing and evaluation.
