Airport Moving Map
Overview
Improve runway safety by reducing the risk of incursions with the world's first FAA approved Airport Moving Map for Class 2 and 3 Electronic Flight Bags.
The Jeppesen Airport Moving Map application for EFBs uses a detailed database to dynamically render maps of an airport's runways, taxiways, and airport structures. Through the use of GPS technology, the application shows pilots their position ("ownship") on the airport surface.
Jeppesen Airport Moving Map technology entered service on Class 3 EFB devices for KLM's fleet of 777s in 2003. Jeppesen has been granted FAA certification for Airport Moving Map for Class 2 EFB devices, making this important tool available for widespread adoption on both Class 2 and 3 EFBs. Jeppesen is the first and only company to have received this certification. Airlines are now able to cost effectively retrofit large fleets of existing aircraft, taking a major step forward in reducing the risk of runway incursions.
Jeppesen currently has 23 customers flying 116 Boeing aircraft with Airport Moving Map on Class 3 EFBs, and is working with a number of major US carriers to implement the Class 2 EFBs that not only shed paper from the flight deck, but also help improve runway safety. The first major US carrier is expected to be flying with an operational Class 2 EFB in early 2009.
The Jeppesen Airport Moving Map is part of a full suite of applications offered for Electronic Flight Bags.
